Christmas in Shinjuku: Helping the Homeless for the Holidays

Atsushi Oshima wanted to know more about Christmas in foreign countries and when he learned that many people often do some type of volunteer work around Christmastime, he decided he wanted to do something similar. He's from Shinjuku so he wanted to do something to help the homeless people living in the underground malls and parks. He made a list of ideas about what he could do. In the end, he decided to make presents. He went to Donkey Hote and bought all sorts of things that he thought homeless people might want. Warm socks and heat packs, candy and chips, wet wipes and juice. Atsushi bought it all and put all of the presents into neat little sacks.Then, he went around Shinjuku looking for people to give the presents to. The elderly lady in the picture above looked so happy and kept repeating, "Thank you! Oh, Thank you so much" again and again. Atsushi was pretty nervous at first, but soon he started to feel really confident. It's always nice to do kind things for others, especially when it's really cold outside.

Atsushi Oshima is currently working hard in the studio to record a new album that the label hopes to release in 2009. Formerly called Escargot 蝸牛エスカルゴ, this will be the first album under the new moniker Superficial Love ス-パ-フィッシュル- ラ-ブ . The following video is a short clip taken at a studio recording session.

蝸牛エスカルゴ Escargot currently has two full-length compact discs available. The first album, Slow Life, Slow Music has an electronic folk sound. The second album, ブルースを歌えない was released in 2005 and has an altogether more mature sound while still retaining the unique charm of the first album. Both albums are available at Tower Records Japan. Plans were in the works for a new Escargot album release and recording begins this Summer 2008.
Since Atsushi Oshima has been an established musician in Japan for almost a decade, his music tastes and sensibilities have changed considerably. In 2008, his label suggested changing his band's name to reflect these new changes. In the Summer of 2008, Atsushi Oshima and his band changed their name from 蝸牛エスカルゴ Escargot to ス-パ-フィッシュル- ラ-ブ Superficial Love. This new name is meant to be ironic and to reflect a change in direction both musically and lyrically for Atsushi Oshima's band.
